The access to clean water is essential to good health, yet much of the world does not have it. This trip is a chance for our group to raise the funds to provide safe water in Tanzania. Approximately 1.8 million children under the age of 5 die each year as a result of diseases caused by unclean water. This is around 5,000 children a day. That means a child dies ever 20 seconds from the water they are drinking. Do you realize that several children have died in the time it took you to read this message? I am so honored to have a chance to help raise money for a water project in Africa by hiking Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. My husband of 33 years and I love to walk/hike and this is a unique opportunity we have to help raise money for clean water in an area in Africa. We have raised 3 sons who are all married to wonderful gals and they all desire to serve God. We have 4 grandchildren and one more due any day. My prayer is that they remember how much God has blessed us and how we are to help those who are in need. I sometimes wonder how we can live in our big houses, drive nice cars, and have so many clothes we will never wear all of them. How can we live in such affluence while thousands of children are dying because they do not have food and clean water? I want Jesus to show me how to share what I have with the poor and declare His glory to the ends of the earth. If I can hike to the top of a mountain in Africa to help a community have a well with good water, then I will do that (even though it scares me sometimes!). I have been to several countries to see Compassion's work and I love what they are doing in those local churches with helping the poor. That is why I want to help in this way - God gets the glory through His church!
