Why? It's quite simple in my opinion. Water is one of the most basic necessities of life, right? BUT...780 million people still lack access to clean water! 3.4 million people die EACH year from a water related disease. Every 21 seconds, a child dies from a water-related illness, which makes it the #2 killer of children around the world. That's 4,000+ children today alone and 29,000+ children in a single week who will lose their chance at a future. My point being, water is a valuable resource and one that humans cannot survive without. Yet, MILLIONS are living without. The sole purpose of our climb is to benefit Compassion's Clean Water for Children intervention in Arusha, Tanzania. A village with 45,000 children and families who do not have access to clean, safe water. However, through our team's fundraising efforts, we are striving to change this.I've always loved adventure and seemingly impossible challenges, and the opportunity to present myself with an incredible challenge and finally meet Irene, while also helping provide water to 45,000+ people is a dream come true! This trip perfectly combines my desire for adventure with my passion for serving others!

Date of Trip: October 2014

My name is Laura Ledgerwood, and I graduated high school last year after 12 years of homeschooling. You will find me at an in-home daycare 5 days a week and at a privately owned riding academy 7 days a week! Besides my two part-time jobs, I own a horse, babysit in my spare time, and rollerblade every chance I get. I've been sponsoring a young girl through Compassion International for the past 6 years. I'll not only be taking on the notorious challenge of summiting Mt. Kilimanjaro and visiting Irene, but I'll be spending an additional 3 weeks volunteering in a local orphanage.
